The CEO of Dollar Tree, Inc., Gary Philbin, is a generous guy to begin with but when he received a call several years ago from 90+ year old, Henrietta Daytz of Sarasota, Florida he couldn’t say "No".
Henrietta, now 102, volunteers at a few nonprofits in Sarasota who help kids and seniors. Over the years, she saw a need and thought maybe the Dollar Tree could help.
She called Dollar Tree headquarters in Chesapeake, VA and identified herself as “Henrietta.” (one word – like Cher, Prince and The-Donald) She explained to Mr. Philbin that she would like to partner with the Dollar Tree and help them distribute gift cards to people who really needed it. What happened next did not surprise her, he said, "Yes". Her philosophy: You don’t ask, you don’t get.
When the packet of gift cards arrived, Henrietta made deliveries to the places she thought would get them in the right hands.
The Friendship Centers, a nonprofit in Southwest Florida that offers a multitude of programs and services was one of those agencies. Over the years, hundreds of dollars worth of Dollar Tree gift cards have been distributed.
This year, there were five lucky recipients. The cards were delivered to the medical and dental clinic of the Friendship Centers in Sarasota. Several providers were asked to play Secret Santa and “jingle” a deserving individual.
It is said that through giving we receive. The heart that gives gathers. And as Mother Theresa said,
"It is not how much you give but how much love you put into giving."
See the attached photos and video to see the impact started by Henrietta, furthered by Gary Philbin at the Dollar Tree and fulfilled by some generous volunteer retired physicians and dentists.
