This month on the Friendship Centers' website there's an outstanding article about health concerns for women over fifty. I pulled the first four questions for the blog this morning, but to read the entire article just click the "More" button below.
To become a patient at the Friendship Centers Health Clinics: If you are 50 or older, you may qualify to become a patient at the Friendship Centers’ Medical or Dental Clinics. In Sarasota, 1900 Brother Geenen Way, call 556.3220 (Medical) or 556.3232 (Dental). In Venice, 2350 Scenic Drive, call the clinic at 584.0041.
Q: What is your main focus in treating women at the clinic?
A: My focus is cardiovascular problems, because they are the No. 1 cause of death for women. No. 2 is cancer and No. 3 is stroke.
Q: What about breast cancer?
A: Breast cancer gets a lot of attention, because it’s such an emotional issue, but the No. 1 cause of cancer deaths in women is lung cancer.
Q: How often should women get mammograms?
A: I encourage my patients of all ages to get a mammogram every year. Some groups have changed their guidelines, but most gynecologists and oncologists say every year. (Friendship Centers’ patients may be eligible for free or discounted mammograms through Sarasota Memorial Hospital’s community clinic.)
Q: What other screenings do you recommend for women?
A: Pelvic exam once a year. Pap smear when indicated. Bone density every five years, if the first one indicated no problems; otherwise annually.
