Ken Atkinson, 85, was on oxygen, and could barely walk when his daughter, Deb, moved him from Syracuse, NY to Nokomis to live with her. When they discovered the Venice Friendship Center and the Balance Movement Class, life changed. Not only did Ken's balance begin to improve - he regained his confidence. And Deb and his granddaughter, Maggie, found their lives enriched by new friends too.
"He laughs again, and feels good about himself," Deb says. The class has helped him regain muscle strength and his breathing has improved significantly. He is able to do things he loves, including taking a stroll around the tree-shaded grounds and enjoying outings to the store, where he is now able to push a shopping cart. He also loves going to his favorite spot: the Venice Jetties.
"I've made friends here, the exercise is helping, and it's a good friendly place to be," Ken says.
